Chapter Twenty-Two

The roar of a crowd surrounded Laurel.

It took her a moment to gather her bearings. Sparrow had been called, and Thorne had latched onto Sparrow and her, so they all came. They were in the Ring.

About two-hundred feet long, and one-fifty wide, the fighting arena smelled like dirt, blood and urine. Sky and sun above. A twelve-foot-high wall surrounded the fighting floor. Three closed gates led somewhere and were possibly the only way of escape. Laurel shielded her eyes and looked higher. Three levels of bleachers housed patrons cheering from their seats—what looked like fae gentry and the echelon of Elphyne were on the ground level, then the general public were on the next two. It was like a football game. Only, there was no game. No. From the spilled blood in the sand beneath her feet, it was a fight for survival.

For the first time since she’d hatched her plan to find Jasper, she had doubts.

Worse. Could she keep Sparrow safe? The small boy was trembling with fear and as pale as the bone sword in their opponent’s hand. Thorne looked ready to decimate as he scanned the arena for threats and presumably exits. Skin pulled taut over the slabs of hard muscle on his body. Fists flexed at his side.

“Stay behind us,” Laurel said to Sparrow, eyeing the only other inhabitants of the Ring—two prisoners from under the hill.

Sparrow had been called up here on his own, which meant the people who ran this farce would make him fight those two much older, more capable, fae. Two adults against one boy? It sickened her.

To the side of the arena, behind a barrier of thick glass, she saw a cluster of guards or soldiers manically discussing the run sheet they had in their hands, most likely wondering how two other people had appeared with Sparrow.

So they were the ones to speak with.

Knowing Thorne would keep Sparrow safe, Laurel lifted her chin and strode straight for them. In all her experience rising to the top of her business, she learned the best way to succeed was to go in guns blazing from the start. The last thing she wanted was to be sent back under the hill. She must do this now.

“Laurel,” Thorne growled, halting her.

“I’ll be back,” she replied with a look over her shoulder. “Look after him.”

Laurel continued her brisk pace until guards manning the boundary started to approach. Most of them were the big burly orc type, but a few were her size. She could take them on if necessary. She could burn them all.

But she’d only get one chance, and then they might use a spell to protect themselves much the same way Thorne had during training.

She just needed to talk to the organizers.

She dared a quick glance back over her shoulder. Thorne, Sparrow, and their opponents weren’t engaging. Everyone knew something wasn’t quite right. Good. The longer they avoided fighting, the better.

“I’d like to talk to the person in charge, please,” Laurel said to the orcs blocking her way.
